Place: conference room, IMDEA Nanociencia.

Abstract:

This lecture will offer a personal perspective on the past, present, and future directions of helicene chemistry. It will address both synthetic strategies and the associated limitations, along with potential solutions. In addition, it will explore the physicochemical properties of helicenes and their prospective applications in areas such as enantioselective catalysis and materials science, highlighting some of the key issues that lie ahead in the chemistry of helically chiral aromatic systems.

Dr. Irena G. Stara is a senior researcher at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, Czech Republic. She graduated from Charles University in Prague and completed her doctoral studies at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry (1993). She then continued her postdoctoral research with Wolfgang Oppolzer at the University of Geneva in Switzerland (1993-1994). She has been a visiting scientist at the University of Glasgow (2000-2001) in the UK, and a visiting professor at the University of Burgundy in Dijon (2007) and at CEMES-CNRS in Toulouse (2018) in France, and at Tokyo University of Science (2016) in Japan. She was recently awarded the title of Chevalier dans l'ordre des Palmes académiques by the French Ministry of Education and Youth in recognition of her scientific and pedagogical contributions. She is currently a member of the editorial boards of Organic Materials and the Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry and of the international advisory committees of several major conferences (ISNA, CURO-pi, Barrande-Vltava). Dr. Stará is an internationally recognized expert in the field of synthesis and study of the properties of pi-electron systems and chirality.
