12.12.2024

Instance:

Madrid, December 12th, 2024. Professor Luis Bañares, chair of the Physical Chemistry at the Chemistry Faculty of Complutense University of Madrid and associated researcher at IMDEA Nanociencia, has been honored with the Humboldt Research Prize by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. This prestigious award recognizes Professor Bañares' outstanding contributions to science and his impact on advancing international research. The award is based on a proposal by Professor Dr. Thomas Baumert.

Luis Bañares received the B.S. degree in Chemistry in 1985 from Universidad Compultense de Madrid and received a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the same university in 1990. He had postdoctoral stays at the California Institute of Technology (1990-1992) and the Institute of Physics at Würzburg University, Germany (1995-1996) with Fulbright and Alexander von Humboldt fellowships, respectively. He joined the Physical Chemistry Department at Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1992 as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor in 1998 and Chair of Physical Chemistry in 2007. He is the Director of the Center for Ultrafast Lasers at Universidad Complutense de Madrid and is an associated researcher to IMDEA Nanociencia. He has published more than 250 articles in international journals. He is Associate Editor of the journal Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Professor Bañares’ research interests are related to experimental and theoretical chemical reaction dynamics. His work focuses on the understanding of fundamental chemical reactions and photodissociation processes at a molecular level. His recognition with the Humboldt Research Prize underscores his significant contributions to his field and highlights the importance of fostering global partnerships in advancing scientific knowledge. His work, supported by this award, will further strengthen ties between Spain and Germany in the pursuit of groundbreaking research.

The Humboldt Research Award celebrates the achievements of internationally renowned researchers from diverse disciplines and nationalities. Award recipients are invited to pursue independent research projects in collaboration with colleagues in Germany, fostering cross-border scientific cooperation. Since its establishment in 1972, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has promoted international academic exchange and collaboration among leading researchers worldwide.
